Tennis classes will work on physical and mental skills. They are a great way for kids to make friends and have fun while improving their co-ordination and fitness.

Tennis a great all-round sport and is a great challenge for kids. It uses many different physical skills, and if you get involved in a local club it can be a great way for kids to build up long-term friendships.

It’s easy to be a big tennis enthusiast when sitting on your couch watching the ball pound back and forth on the TV screen. The speed and ease that the pros exude is mind-boggling. But think about all the skills needed to play this sport. Firstly you obviously need a good level of fitness and stamina to even think about lasting through an entire tennis match! It is definitely a test of endurance. Perfect for those high-energy kids that almost seem as if they are powered by long-life batteries.

Secondly, you are going to need both strength and flexibility. This will mean building up muscle strength to get the power to propel that ball across the net, and equally importantly to propel your body around the court as you chase each returned ball. Flexibility is necessary to get a performance edge. Building up the power to hit hard will only get you so far, but being nimble and agile might even be more important. As junior tennis players clearly are not going to be hitting the balls as hard as adults, it is a good time to work on flexibility and agility.

This skill will also link in with the mental agility needed to be a good tennis player. Kids will learn to think quickly as there is no time to stand and make decisions about where your feet and racket need to be. Hence the sport will get their brains revved up and hopefully will work on their ability to assess a situation fast and make the best decision they can to maintain their competitive advantage in a match.

Overall, tennis requires a collection of varying skills. The ultimate ideal is to have all these skills, but it is very feasible for kids work on the different areas over time and still gets a great level of satisfaction out of the sport. All children mature at different speeds and as time goes by physical and mental abilities will gradually even out. Above all, getting involved in a sport in your childhood will give you a good social outlet. Going to a tennis summer camp can be a marvelous way of meeting kids from other schools and areas. Likewise, joining a club where you enroll in regular lessons in a group setting will provide a way to make friends outside of school. It’s also a good opportunity to get out of the academic rivalry that can exist in a classroom, and a way of leveling out kids of different sizes and ages.

If you have a few children and they are all potentially interested in getting involved in sport, bringing them along to the same club or centre can help them to bond and build up a shared interest. Sometimes it can be hard to be “friends” with a sibling a few years older or younger, as a big gap can build up between school years. But in a social setting with a sport, a lot of common ground can be found. We all know that eventually age gaps becomes irrelevant, but the shared memories from trips to competitions and tournaments will be talked and joked about for a long, long time to come!

So check out tennis classes for kids in your area. See how competitive or social it can be, and decide what will suit your kids best. And who knows, maybe you’ll even have a budding star in your midst!
